In Ukraine, buckwheat has been a "culture of an alarming border" for centuries due to its unpretentiousness. After all, the plant grows well even on poor soils and has a short maturation period (70-85 days). In homesteads, it is usually used as a siderate to enrich the soil with phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen and organic substances. Using the ability of buckwheat to structure and loosen the soil, farmers often sow it in the rows of gardens and vineyards. Also, one of the advantages of the plant over other siderates is its resistance to overdrying of the soil.
However, one should not forget about the honey-bearing qualities of buckwheat! During flowering, the smell of its flowers actively attracts bees and other insects. Under favorable conditions, 70 to 100 kg of honey can be obtained from 1 hectare.
As a honey plant, this culture is sown in several periods from the end of May to the beginning of June. Before sowing, it is advisable to treat the seeds with microfertilizers containing molybdenum ammonium, boric acid or wood ash.
The sowing rate is from 70 kg/ha to 90 kg/ha depending on the temperature region of the country and the method of sowing:
- the lower the constant air temperatures, the higher the sowing rate;
- the wide-row method consumes less seed than when sowing in narrow rows.
