Rye seeds have long occupied a prominent place among grain crops. As experienced agronomists say, rye yields a harvest even where nothing grows. And this is true: rye is not picky about the structure of the soil and nitrogen, is relatively little affected by pests and diseases, tolerates frosts well.
Due to its nutritional properties, resistance to diseases and frost, ability to suppress weeds, this cereal is in active demand both among serious farmers and among owners of small homesteads. However, it is not worth using rye in joint crops precisely because of its powerful depressing qualities. Cultivation of this crop as siderate increases the fertility and structure of the soil, promotes the development of soil microorganisms, which in turn allows the cultivation of the main crops organically.

As siderate, rye is sown from the end of August to the middle of September, because the growing season of the plant is about 45 days. The sowing rate is:

- manually - 2 kg/hectare

- under the seeder - 70 kg/ha.

Rye seeds

Rye is one of the main agricultural crops, which is widely popular due to its unique properties. In Ukraine, rye is grown both for animal feed and for obtaining grain, which is used in the food industry and for making flour. Rye is also an important element of crop rotation, helping to improve the soil structure and reduce the risk of erosion.

This crop is characterized by high resistance to low temperatures, which makes it an ideal choice for growing in northern regions. Rye tolerates various types of soils well and is less demanding of moisture, so it can be grown even on soils unsuitable for other crops. Another important advantage is high productivity and self-pollination.

Rye seeds have excellent germination and the ability to grow quickly, which allows you to get a good harvest in a short time. The use of this crop in agriculture helps not only to obtain a stable harvest, but also to improve the quality of soils, which are an important element of sustainable farming.

Rye seeds have excellent physical and biological characteristics, which makes it universal for many farms, both small and large. It is used for growing on pastures, for the production of animal feed and even as green fertilizer to improve soil fertility.

Sowing rates for sowing rye

Sowing rye (Secale cereale) is grown as a winter grain and fodder crop. Seeding rates depend on the region, soil fertility, sowing time and the purpose of use (grain, green mass, green manure).

Main rye seeding rates

  • Winter rye for grain (net sowing): 4.5-6.0 million germinating grains/ha (180-220 kg/ha with an average weight of 1000 grains).
  • For green fodder or haylage: 6.0-7.0 million grains/ha (220-250 kg/ha to create a dense grass stand).
  • As a green manure crop: 6.0-8.0 million grains/ha (230-260 kg/ha).
  • In mixtures (e.g. with vetch or peas): 60-80 kg/ha of rye + appropriate legume rate.

Depth of sowing

  • On heavy soils - 2-3 cm.
  • On light and sandy loamy soils - 3-5 cm.
  • In dry areas, it can be increased to 5-6 cm to allow the grain to lie in the moist layer.

Additional recommendations

The optimal sowing date is the same as for winter wheat, but rye is more cold-resistant and can tolerate later sowing.

In areas with a risk of liquefied crops (sandy soils, cold winters), it is better to increase the sowing rate by 10-15%.

When growing for green fodder and green manure, sow as densely as possible for rapid weight gain.
