Sowing rye (Secale cereale) is grown as a winter grain and fodder crop. Seeding rates depend on the region, soil fertility, sowing time and the purpose of use (grain, green mass, green manure).
Main rye seeding rates
- Winter rye for grain (net sowing): 4.5-6.0 million germinating grains/ha (180-220 kg/ha with an average weight of 1000 grains).
- For green fodder or haylage: 6.0-7.0 million grains/ha (220-250 kg/ha to create a dense grass stand).
- As a green manure crop: 6.0-8.0 million grains/ha (230-260 kg/ha).
- In mixtures (e.g. with vetch or peas): 60-80 kg/ha of rye + appropriate legume rate.
