Alfalfa is a leader among fodder grasses in terms of protein content, which is not inferior to animal protein in its qualities. Alfalfa hay collected during bud formation contains up to 10% protein.

The presence of amino acids, Ca, P, K, N elements, vitamins A, D, E, group B (B1, B2, B3, B4, B5) makes this culture indispensable in the field of animal husbandry.

Alfalfa, as a fodder crop, gives significant yields of both green mass and hay. If you follow the rules of sowing, irrigation and crop rotation, you can get 4-5 slopes per summer. The average yield of green mass is 45-75 t/ha, hay 8-15 t/ha. Seeds can be harvested in the 2nd year, the yield is 500-900 kg/ha.

It is impossible not to note the soil-forming and phytosanitary role of alfalfa: a powerful root system improves the structure of the soil, increases its water permeability, and contributes to the accumulation of humus.

Alfalfa is a fairly light- and heat-loving plant, demanding on moisture, but resistant to drought, thanks to a deeply located powerful root system and can provide itself with moisture from the deeper layers of the soil.

Alfalfa is not recommended to be sown on acidic (pH5) and saline (pH>8) soils.

Sowing rate under a seeder - 15-20 kg/ha, by hand - 0.5 kg per hectare.

Alfalfa Seeds

Alfalfa seeds are a reliable choice for farmers and agribusinesses seeking to obtain high-quality feed for cattle, horses, goats and other animals. This perennial legume is characterized by high yields, drought resistance and rich content of protein and nutrients.

Alfalfa seeds are an opportunity to collect several slopes of green mass rich in protein and calcium every year. The plant recovers well after mowing, winters well, and thanks to its deep root system, it effectively uses moisture even in arid regions of Ukraine.

Seeds from trusted suppliers provide a friendly ladder, high resistance to diseases and a long period of grass stand operation - up to 5-7 years without loss of quality.

So, alfalfa seeds are a strategic investment in stable and efficient forage production with minimal costs for care and feeding.

Alfalfa Seeding Rates

Alfalfa seeding rates depend on the sowing method, soil and climatic conditions, and the purpose of sowing (for fodder, hay, seed). The main recommendations are as follows:

The main alfalfa sowing rates

  • The usual row method (15 cm row spacing): 15-20 kg of seeds/ha.
  • Continuous sowing method: 18-22 kg/ha.
  • Wide-row method (45 cm row spacing, for seed drills): 6-8 kg/ha.
  • In mixtures with other crops (e.g. cereal-legume grass mixtures): 6-10 kg/ha of alfalfa, depending on the composition of the mixture.

Depth of planting

  • On light soils - 2.5-3 cm.
  • On heavy and wet soils - 1.5-2 cm.

The seeds are very small, so excessive seeding dramatically reduces germination.

Additional factors

Germination and seed purity: if the indicators are below the standard, the seeding rate is increased.

Purpose: for long-term use for hay, the rate can be increased to 22-25 kg/ha for a denser grass stand.

In arid areas, it is advisable to sow a little less often (12-15 kg/ha) so that the plants make better use of moisture.
